March 2006 After three years of work on my Ebay store I had finally reached about two thousand dollars a week in sales.
Then without warning in March 2006 Ebay suspended my account. On the same day they sent 397 Emails to me telling me that my account was paid up, totally swamping my Email account. (I knew that, I have the fees automatically deducted from my Paypal card.) Apparently just for fun. My dear friends at Eblah sent emails to my customers saying that my account was suspended. Oh by the way, they locked me out of my account which made it impossible to check my records to determine which orders had been shipped, canceled or pending.
By march 30 I was receiving emails and phone calls from customers all over the world wanting to know what was going on. I attempted to communicate with Ebay via phone, email and live help. No one could or would tell me what the problem was or how to address it. I did however receive another blast of Emails which of course hosed up my email account again. Thank you very much!
I then started emailing Bill Cobb's office and actually got a message from a real person. This person was called Reg. Apparently very few people at Ebay have last names. Of course he did not tell me what was wrong or how to address the problem. He did admit that the hundreds of emails I had received were in error. But it looked like I was getting somewhere.
On April 10 I was told that I had to verify my Identity by faxing a copy of my driver's License. I did so. Please keep in mind that damn near every drivers license issued in the US is designed so that you cannot make a clear electronic copy in order to foil counterfeiting.
Around April 15 I started receiving emails with no one's name on them saying that they had reviewed my case and decided that my account could not be reinstated "due to the violation of our site policy stated below: PSU joeblow123
What the hell is PSU joeblow123? I ask myself. ( By now I'm talking to myself) God knows talking to Ebay doesn't work!
I then got another email saying that my account could not be reinstated because my faxed copy driver's license was illegible. No shit!
By now I'm working day and night to build a Yahoo store offering the same goods at a reduced price because they do not charge a fee for sales. By the way, Yahoo actually has people that will talk to you on the telephone! What a novel idea!
Finally I hear from good old Bill's office again and I'm told that they believe my account was linked to a previous account of my son's and that his account was closed and owes about $75.00. I was given the choice of paying the seventy five dollars or providing proof that we were two different people. I did both. In an incredible burst of insight it becomes clear to me. They want $75 to reinstate me. Why the hell someone didn't say that in the first place is beyond me. I strongly suspect that no one at Ebay really knew why I had been suspended. It just took this long to figure it out. By now I figure I've lost about $6000 in sales. Seventy five bucks is nothing compared to the loss this is causing me.
About April 20 I received an email from Ebay's accounting people saying that they owe me money instead of my owing them money. Apparently this was just a follow up on the 700 plus emails I have received from them so far saying that I don't owe them any money.
On April 22 I received another email saying that one of the documents I sent was illegible.
By this time I am concentrating on the new Yahoo store and orders are trickling in.
On April 30 I received an email out of the blue saying I was reinstated.
I estimate that Ebay cost me close to $10,000 in sales and a huge dose of aggravation over their screw-up which could have been solved in a couple of minutes with a clearly written Email or (god help us) a phone call.

Two years later I am still doing business with eBay. Unfortunately that is where the traffic is. I am sincerely looking forward to the day I tell eBay to stuff it!
Fast forward to August 2009.
Things have gone relatively smooth for three years. A few listings taken down due to eBay screw ups. Unfortunately this is all part of doing business on eBay. eBay sales have dropped off significantly. eBay's traffic is about 20% of what I was seeing in 2003 fees are about triple. Happily the Yahoo store is doing well.
Out of the blue PayPal ties up a few thousand in funds, refuses to process PayPal or credit card transactions . For all intents and purposes I'm out of business. It is worth noting that I had made the mistake of signing up for PayPal's Website Payment Pro to handle my credit card processing. eBay uses the backup funding source for their monthly fee payment, checks bounce and I can't pay for a large order as I promised.
Apparently eBay had added an additional $15.06 to the $75 they claimed I owed from 2003. Keep in mind that the $75 bill wasn't mine to begin with. As a result PayPal shut both of my accounts.
After about 40 phone calls I was able to get my accounts unblocked. I paid the $15.06 that I didn't owe and I'm back in business.
My projected date for shutting down the eBay operation: Late 2010. I'll probably stop taking PayPal payments at the Yahoo store as well. Sadly PayPal can't be trusted.
My advice: use eBay / PayPal as an incubator for your on-line business. Open an on-line store, Open a bank account specifically for your business. DONT! give PayPal a credit card number. Keep a minimum amount of money in the PayPal account and the business checking account. If and when your business looks like it will take off. Drop eBay and PayPal.
My Yahoo store is still doing well. Check out: http://DonsCycleWare.com
November 2012: PayPal has been dropped as a payment option at our Yahoo store years ago. Credit card and debit card transactions are accepted. Out of the blue I received a nasty gram from a customer. He was mad as hell because he attempted to use a PayPal card to make a purchase at our Yahoo store. The charge didn't go through. The credit card processor indicated that he had entered the wrong address. My customer was upset because he knew he had used the correct address. This was out of my control. I recommended that he touch base with PayPal.
January 2013: We still list a few items on eBay. Many eBay customers still use PayPal. I attempted to print a postage label using our PayPal card. The USPS site indicated a bad address match. I contacted PayPal. For some mysterious reason PayPal had changed the billing address on our PayPal account in June of 2012. Apparently my customer from November was experiencing the same problem. I wonder how many other orders have been lost?
February 22 2013: Out of the blue my PayPal balance was put on hold. Luckily I taken my own advice and kept very little money in the account. I gave them a call and was told that I had an outstanding balance of $26 from an account I closed in 2010. Just to make things a little more complicated I could not use the money in my PayPal account to pay the amount they claimed I owed. It is worth mentioning I am never late in paying my fees. They are automatically deducted. I have no idea how I could have owed this amount. I checked my emails going back to the time I closed the account and could not find an invoice due for that account. This seemed like a good time to call it quits. I pulled my money out of PayPal, canceled all eBay listings. When I attempted to close my eBay and PayPal accounts I was told that I had to wait 30 days. That date is marked on my calendar :)
All and all it has been a pretty good run. I lasted almost ten years on eBay. I suppose that is better than most. Hopefully this will be my last post barring any future insanity from eBay and PayPal.
February 26, 2013 I received an email informing me that we are no longer eligible for Top Rated Seller status. I suppose this makes sense because I have removed all listings and instructed Ebay to close my account
I spoke too soon. March 4 2013 I called Ebay and PayPal and informed them once again that I wanted to close my PayPal and Ebay accounts. I was informed that I had a credit balance in my account. Apparently the refund was credited within a few minutes of my phone call. I instructed the representative to transfer the credit to my PayPal account then close the Ebay account immediately. I was told once again that it would be 30 days before my account would be closed. When I asked if the 30 day period started on the 22nd or March 4 the representative did not know. I followed up with an email as well. Ebay then credited a $3.42 refund to my PayPal account. Shortly thereafter PayPal gave me $2.41 cash back for using my PayPal card. The money was transferred to my PayPal account as requested. I followed up with a written demand that Ebay and PayPal close my accounts immediately.
March 5/ 2013 I received an email in response to my letters telling:me that it would take 30 days to receive my refund and 180 days to "completely" close my account. Either the last three people I spoke to were wrong / lying or this guy is. I have attempted to withdraw the $5.73 from PayPal. As soon as that is completed I will close my bank account that was connected to the PayPal account.
March 6 Bank account closed. For some reason I received a new PayPal card despite the fact that my card doesn't expire for another nine months and I told them to close my account. WTF?

eBay apparently cannot or will not communicate with sellers. I enjoy buying on eBay and have had good experiences with people who sell there. eBay provides a great service when everything works as it should.
Unfortunately my experiences as a seller have not been so good. I opened a store and sales started to go pretty steady. I received two negative feed backs after getting 112 positive. In both cases I immediately refunded the buyers money and let them keep the items. They were both very happy. I had apparently switched labels an sent the two items to the wrong persons. Unfortunately this dropped my feedback rating to below 95% in a 90 day period and eBay suspended me and canceled my listings without warning or a chance to explain what happened.
eBay just lost a seller. Yahoo just got a new customer. Thanks for the idea!

I have had good luck buying on eBay. As a matter of fact I am one of your customers! After hearing the horror stories about selling on eBay I'll stick to Craigslist.
I was having an issue with a buyer who left a negative feedback unaware that the confirmed address he had provided was his previous. What happened, he left me a negative, I contacted buyer, he said he will remove but EBAY does not have the tool ready yet LOL>>
RIDICULOUS...
They said a month later they will provide the tool, NEVER got the tool until October, I contacted them on OCT... and they said whops sorry it is passed 30 day... and we can not remove... ur bad feedback..
WHAT A BUNCH OF SUCKERS>> !!!
You have to wonder how eBay stays in business when they treat the sellers like dirt.
If the buyers knew how tough it is to sell on eBay they would be surprised!
Keep up the good work. I ride a 2006 Shadow and I'll be sending an order to your Yahoo store. Good prices!
Dude ebay sux big time! I have had nothing but problems with them. The same thing that happen to you happen to me except when they emailed me, they addressed me by a different user name. They dont believe it isnt me no matter what i say i am prepared to do to prove it and the only emails I get are ones telling me to follow their instructions on how to fix it. They told me i was linked to another account so they closed mine and my husbands. EBAY SUX! My advice to anyone is to stay away from ebay. The have never and I have never had any problems with buyers or sellers but as soon as I sold something over $3000.00 thats when they cancelled me. Ebay can go to hell.
Congratulations! This site came up number one on google after I typed in EBAY SUX.
On about my fourth ebay purchase I ran into a problem. Ebay and paypal ran from their responsiblities.
Here is my contribution to ebay and the ebay seller.

I am a buyer with 100% positive feedback & I have been suspended due to "a link" that I had already removed with my flatmate's site. They cannot understand that I ONCE paid for an item with his pay-pal BEFORE setting up my OWN. I am not getting any sense out of them and can't find a phone number in Australia. If there is one can someone post it here? Thanks & I will look at Yahoo to buy.

Ebay is a bunch of crooks who raise the listing fees to where it's almost impossible to make any profit. They have terrible communication and treat their sellers like crap. They take your money before the buyer even pays. Sellers have NO rights whatsoever. BEWARE!!!
Do not under any circumstances use PayPal as your credit card processor for your on-line store.
Even accepting PayPal payments is risky.
Always clear all funds from PayPal at the end of every day.
They can put you out of business in a heart beat! PayPal has gone down hill fast since Ebay started taking an active part in its management.
